On May 22,2003, Michael Nolte was pulled over on the interstate highway in central Missouri by a state trooper. He was asked to leave his car, get in the patrol car, to receive a warning for driving too long in the left lane. Bearing down on the patrol car parked on the shoulder, a trucker with his leg on the dash, bending down for sunglasses, slammed at 65 mph. into the rear of the Ford Crown Victoria. The car exploded and was engulfed in fire in 1.8 seconds. The interior temperatures reached 2,500 degrees in 3 seconds. The young trooper burned to death. Nolte was rescued by two strangers 15 seconds before he would have suffered the same fate.
Nolte suffered 3rd and 4th degree burns over 40% of his body and spent over two months in a Burn ICU, 100 miles from home. He endured eight operations to transplant new skin onto his wounds.
With the support of his wife of 25 years, their three young daughters and the prayers of people across the nation, he returned to work after 15 months of grueling rehabilitation. He exhibited determination, grace and a profound commitment to return to fullness of life. As a result of the wreck, Congress passed the “Pass With Care” law requiring motorists to move over when they see flashing lights on the shoulder, thus preventing untold numbers of similar tragedies.
His story of overcoming incredible adversity has been featured in dozens of newspapers and newscasts. CBS covered the surprise reunion two years later with the men that saved his life. The feature was named for an Emmy.
The story shared either in person or in the book is one that is engaging, inspiring and unforgettable. It transcends the struggles of a man that many can relate to as he is rendered completely disabled and how he came back to a life he still loves.
A successful businessman, Nolte owns two couture bridal salons in Kansas City and as a coordinator has directed over 1,000 weddings in his 28 year long career.
